Following her “rediscovery” in 1955, Louise Brooks began to appear on magazine covers published all around the world. Most of these magazines were related to film, though a few were not. This page presents a selection of magazine covers dating from 1958 through 1985, the year the actress died. Others are known to exist, but these are either the most significant, little known, or visually appealing. Most of the magazines shown below are film magazines, except for Observer, the magazine of the London newspaper of the same name (this issue carried a piece by Kenneth Tynan): Upstate New York, a local interest publication from Rochester, New York; and the Little Balkans Review and Gargoyle, both of which are literary magazines. The Little Balkans Review contains a long article by Charles Cagle on Brooks as a “Kansas author”, while Gargoyle contains nothing related to Brooks. (Brooks also appeared on the cover of the January 1990 issue of Gargoyle.) Notably, the Positif cover was Brooks’ first in more than two decades, since she appeared on the cover of Piccola, an Italian magazine, in 1937. The November 1985 issue of Film in Review contains a long tribute to the actress by Brooks’ friend William K. Everson, the noted film historian. Everson’s tribute followed her death just a few months before.
