Over the years, most of the surviving films in the Louise Brooks’ filmography have been released on home video — either on VHS, Laser Disc, DVD, or Blu-ray somewhere around the world.** It’s a surprising number. This page on the Louise Brooks Society website displays most, but not all, of the known commercial releases, including a few “grey market” titles which have made their way into library holdings and / or been sold through regular commercial channels. Not all home video is created equal. While the quality of commercial releases can and does vary, even greatly, it is worth noting that many of the grey market and / or budget releases offer a lesser if not an inferior viewing experience — unless such a release is your only option. If you are able, search out the recommended release for any given title; each is marked with an Ebertian two thumbs up

Let me also add that if you are a Louise Brooks fan, good quality physical media is a great investment as streaming services don’t often show silent films, while the versions found on YouTube and similar platforms often prove to be as ephemeral as they are sometimes poor quality. My advice is “get them while you can” ….
Compiling this page surprised me…. I hadn’t realized there had been so many different releases of each of Brooks surviving films. Not surprisingly, Pandora’s Box stands as the actress’ most popular film in terms of physical media, with some three dozen releases from around the world dating as far back as 1986. Another of Brooks’ films, Diary of a Lost Girl, was also released in the early 1980s — while Louise Brooks was still alive, which is also surprising.
The titles of the films listed below link to their respective Louise Brooks Society filmography pages, which are full of information about the films themselves. Additionally, when possible, I have also tried to link to other sources of catalog information and / or purchase. (Most all of the purchase links direct to amazon.com in the United States — though fans elsewhere will want to check their respective amazon.com or other online outlets which sell physical media…. I hope to add more links in the future.) It is worth pointing out that many of the titles shown below are “out-of-print” and thus no longer available, not even on the secondary market. Some older DVDs and VHS tapes, for example, are hard to find.

** I believe there once was a Beta Tape release of a Brooks’ film, but I can’t seem to track it down. There may have also been a small gauge (9mm?) film available of one of Brooks’ westerns. Does anyone know?

According to a posting on 8mm Forum, there once was a Super 8mm print of Pandora’s Box issued by Janus Films, although, It apparently was an unauthorized copy, since Janus never sold prints and never dealt in Super 8. // DVD Beaver has a highly detailed technical comparison of the two recommended releases from 2024.

A bit of personal history: In the early 1990s, when I first came across Louise Brooks and was determined to see every one of her surviving films, I used to go to the local Tower Records in San Francisco and flip through the bins hoping to find something new. There wasn’t much to find…. Seemingly, only the KINO releases were distributed to the stores or video rental shops I frequented, where I usually found them in the “classics section”. Then, I discovered that other films could be purchased through mail-order from the likes of Unknown Video and Grapevine Video. And the rest is history…. The first few Louise Brooks films I ever bought — Pandora’s Box, Diary of a Lost Girl, Prix de beaute — were on VHS. I still have them, along with a few VHS dupes of films (sent by friends) of titles that hadn’t yet been commercially released (and in one case, still haven’t). Images of those early, first purchases can be found on this page. Today, still, the soundtrack on the 1993 Home Vision Pandora’s Box VHS tape remains a favorite.
