splash  The Louise Brooks Society website is home to an online archive whose goal is to document “all things Brooksie.” This page is a jumping-off point to the various annotated bibliographies located on this website. The pages listed below both reference and help organize the vast amount of material written about the actress. These pages contain links to select citations, and serve as a directory to both vintage and contemporary material about the actress which can be read online.

Bibliographies are not as dull as you might think. And for a number of reasons, they can make for interesting reading. Not only do they reference rare or little known texts, but they also track the showing of Brooks’ films, chart her fame, and reveal a decade-by-decade history of the actress’ place in movie history, and later on, in popular culture.

Over the years, the LBS has done a considerable amount of research, putting through hundreds of inter-library loans, scouring every accessible online database and digital archive, and personally visiting more than three dozen libraries across California and the United States, as well as the Cinémathèque Francaise in Paris and the British Film Institute and British National Library in London. The LBS has also sought out scarce books and even acquired a few roles of microfilm in pursuit of previously unknown or undocumented material. [A fuller record of the research conducted by the LBS can be found HERE.]

The citations found on these pages date from 1906 to the present, and are updated when necessary. Each of the bibliographies are arranged in chronological order. The material cited comes from books, pamphlets, magazines, newspapers, journals, scholarly publications, ‘zines, and websites from around the world. If you know of additional entries, or can provide further information on any of the citations noted on these pages, please CONTACT the Louise Brooks Society. If you would like to help find vintage newspaper and magazine articles, please check the HELP WANTED page.
